How to Structure a Chapter
A chapter is a small story with its own shape — an opening, a shift, a reason to turn the page. Start by giving each chapter a single intention, then end on a hook, a question or a change.
Developing Your Cast of Characters
- •Give each major character a want and a flaw
- •Know what they would never do — that reveals who they are
- •Give them a distinct voice the reader can hear
- •Let your antagonist be the hero of their own story
Finding Your Genre & Readership
Your genre is a promise to the reader about what kind of experience awaits. Read widely inside it, learn its conventions, then decide which to honour and which to gently break.
Writing Prompts
Story starters to spark your next session.
Fiction
- Two characters meet for the first time on the worst day of both their lives. What happens next?
- A small town keeps one secret everyone agrees never to mention. Today someone new arrives and asks.
- Write a scene entirely in dialogue — no narration. Let the reader hear everything.
Non-Fiction
- What do you know now that you wish someone had told you five years ago? Write that chapter.
- Take a belief you hold and argue the opposite side, honestly, for one page.
- Explain your core idea as if to a curious twelve-year-old, then rewrite it for an expert.
Memoir
- Recall a small object from your childhood. Who handed it to you, and why do you still remember it?
- Write the scene you've been avoiding. Start with the weather.
- Describe a turning point without naming the emotion — let the detail carry it.
Poetry
- Take an ordinary morning task and write it as a sacred ritual.
- Borrow a line from a song you love. Write a poem that answers it.
- Write a poem with no adjectives. Then write it again with three, and choose.
