Imagine, for a moment, that you place your hands gently over a friend's shoulders after a hard day. You don't say much. You don't need to. Something in that simple gesture — the warmth, the stillness, the quiet intention behind it — already feels like something. That something has a name. It's called Reiki.

Reiki is, at its heart, a gentle healing practice that works with the energy that flows through all living things. It's non-invasive, it's peaceful, and it has been bringing comfort and balance to people all over the world for nearly a century. If you've picked up this little book because you're curious, perhaps a little sceptical, and wondering what all the fuss is about — you're in exactly the right place.

The word Reiki itself comes from two Japanese words. *Rei*, which means universal or spiritually guided, and *Ki*, which means life force energy. Put them together and you get something beautifully simple: universally guided life force energy. The idea that a life force energy exists within and around us isn't new or unusual. In fact, cultures across the world have known about it for thousands of years, simply calling it by different names. In China it's known as *Qi* or *Chi*. In India it's called *Prana*. The ancient Hawaiians called it *Mana*. Different words, different traditions — but all pointing towards the same invisible, animating force that keeps us alive, breathing and functioning.

Reiki as a formal practice was developed in Japan in the early twentieth century by a man named Mikao Usui. He was a spiritual seeker, a scholar and a deeply thoughtful human being who spent years studying ancient texts and meditation before experiencing a profound awakening on Mount Kurama during a twenty-one day retreat. What came through to him on that mountaintop wasn't just a personal revelation — it was a system of healing he felt called to share. He spent the rest of his life doing exactly that, teaching and treating people in Japan, and planting the seeds of what would eventually travel across the world and find its way, perhaps, into your hands right now.
