It was an ordinary morning when it all began.
The kind that doesn't announce itself. No special light, no birds doing anything particularly remarkable. Just a Tuesday, cold at the edges, with the smell of bread already drifting from the bakery on Linden Street and the sound of Mr. Fig's gate creaking the way it always did, because no one had oiled it in twenty years.
Maya was walking to school with her lunchbox banging against her knee, thinking about nothing much — whether she'd left her reading book on the table, whether the clouds meant rain, whether her sock had a hole in it or if that was just a wrinkle. Ordinary thoughts for an ordinary Tuesday.
And then she saw Mr. Fig.
He was standing at his letterbox, holding a single envelope, and he looked the way he sometimes looked: smaller than usual. Like something was pressing down on his shoulders that nobody else could see. His coat was buttoned all the way up even though it wasn't that cold, and his white hair was combed very flat, the way people comb their hair when they want to feel tidy even if everything else feels uncertain.
Maya nearly walked past. Most mornings she did. Most mornings she was thinking about her sock or her reading book or the clouds.
But this morning she stopped.
She didn't have a plan. She hadn't been practising. She just looked at Mr. Fig standing there with his envelope, and something in her chest said: *say something*.
